Pumpkin Seed Oil Basics

For generations, Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil has been a staple of Austro-Hungarian cuisine.  As a product protected by the European Union Protected Geographical Indication designation, Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil takes its place among some of the greatest and most iconic foods of Europe including French Champagne and Italian Parmigiana-Reggiano.  To maintain this designation, each bottle we produce is required to meet the highest and most rigorous standards of the European Union PGI laws and regulations.

The process of making Traditional Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil is labor intensive, requiring a great deal of precision, love and care. Styrian Oil Pumpkins, native to Austria, are planted in the spring and harvested in the fall.  After pumpkins are harvested, seeds are separated from the pulp and washed thoroughly.  Once the seeds have dried, they are roasted very carefully as temperature has a great impact on the overall flavor of the oil.  Once the seeds have cooled, they are hulled and pressed to yield a rich, dark green oil that is prized for its nutty flavor and many health benefits.  It typically takes about 2.5kg of seeds to produce 1 liter of oil.
